H.C. Question 108-109 – The Seventh Commandment of the Decalogue – Sermon Outline
Intro: You may have seen or heard about the couple at the Coldplay concert recently. They were listening to the live performance, the man standing behind the woman with his arms wrapped around her. Then the jumbotron camera shows them, and they immediately separate and duck away and hide in shame? Word is this revealed an adulterous relationship between a CEO and the woman head of HR for the company.
Need: Sin will find us out, and all mankind has a conscience and knows that sin is shameful. When our sin is exposed or revealed in such a clear and "naked" way, all we can do is try to run or hide in shame. Adultery is a very shameful sin, as it dishonors our bodies, our spouses, and our God who made us.
Theme: God made us in His image, body and soul, to be pure and holy in our sexual conduct.
Some things are permissible but often not beneficial and can lead to bondage. (12-14)
Our union with Christ regulates how we are to use our bodies – for His glory. (15-17)
We must flee sexual sin because it dishonors God who indwells us and degrades our own bodies. (18-20)
