Let me imagine a conversation for you.我来跟你讲一个想象的对话。

A跟B在讲话,A talking to B.A says,Are you a Christian? B says,No. A说你是基督徒吗?B说我不是。A:What have you accepted Jesus as your personal savior?A说,那有没有接受主耶稣做你个人的救主啊?B:yes,I have,but I haven’t been baptized yet. B说我接受了主耶稣,但是我还没有洗礼。A说,Oh,it’s only a ceremony,you have accepted Jesus that’s good enough. A说,哎哟,这个只是仪式罢了,你信了耶稣就OK啦!Who is more serious about baptism?B or A?这两个人谁对洗礼更认真?B还是A?B! A说,Oh,it’s only a ceremony.只是仪式罢了。You see,we need to take more seriously what God takes seriously.神对一些事情认真,我们也要认真的。不能说只是仪式罢了,and do it quickly.很快地草草了事。

Sunday afternoon people don’t come to baptism,星期天下午很多人都不来洗礼的,the lord’s supper which was squeezed at the end so very quickly,we move on to the offering and the benediction.圣餐草草了事,快快奉献祝福,完毕。I try often to put the lord’s supper before the sermon,I hope you noticed that.希望各位注意到,有的时候我把圣餐放在讲道之前。I’d rather rush to the sermon than rush to the lord’s supper.我宁愿讲道快快讲,好过圣餐快快做。You see,the reading of the Bible and the lord’s supper is God doing something for us,God saying something to us,读经、圣餐是神在做事,神在讲话,preaching is our explanation of the Bible,讲道是我们解释我们读过的经文。And so we need to take seriously what is happening from top down.所以我们要认真看看什么是从上而下的。

I hope that some of us at this church have noticed some of the things I say during the lord’s supper in the past half a year,我希望各位在这个教会,你听到我过去半年每次主持圣餐的时候,我里面有一些的话,you probably don’t hear from many other pastors.你很多牧师口中你听不到的。Jesus wants to feed you,耶稣要喂养你,we also bring the lord’s supper to the elderly who cannot come to church,我们也把圣餐带给老人家就是不能来教会的。Now I was trying to say to you just now,that the lord’s supper is a seal,God the father is guaranteeing all the good promises of the covenant in Jesus.刚才我在说的是圣餐是约的印记盖章,在约里面,耶稣基督所成就的一切的应许,父神向我们保证。

Now we go to somebody who is very old and very sick.好,现在我们去一个很老的病重的老人的家。I don’t have time for all of this theology,没有时间讲这么多神学的。we’re not going to go through the covenant,我们不会解释约的意义,except for those who can pick it up.有些可以明白的我们会讲。Here are some of the things I say to the older people,我对老人讲些什么话呢?Jesus loves you forever,耶稣爱你到永远,Jesus will save you forever,耶稣永远救你,Jesus will never leave you.耶稣永远不离开你。This is not a very lighthearted way,oh,Jesus loves you.这个不仅仅是很轻松的“耶稣爱你”的啵。Because these are the promises from God in the covenant through Jesus,因为这些是神在约里面透过主耶稣的十字架跟复活要给我们的应许,that’s why I say Jesus loves you and saves you and will be with you forever.所以我说耶稣爱你救你,与你同在直到永远。It’s not just something that you pick it up from Kindergarten Sunday school.不是从幼稚园的主日学拣两句话跟他讲道的,ok。

God is here.上帝在这里OK。So we do say,God,please forgive my sins.我们也会说,神哪,求你赦免我们的罪。And at the end of the lord’s supper,圣餐快要结束之前,whether in church or in the elderly home,不论是在老人的家里或者是在教会,you might have noticed I begin to say this more frequently.你可能注意到最近我多讲了一些。Lord,one day we will no more have the lord’s supper,主啊,有一天我们不会再有圣餐了,because we will see you face to face.因为到那天我们要面对面看到你的。Lord Jesus come quickly,主耶稣啊,愿你快来!but if you don’t come,但是你不来的话呢,make us faithful and obedient.求你帮助我们有信心忠诚顺服。So we bring in the truth behind the phrase you observe the lord’s death till he comes.就按照圣经说我们纪念祂的死直到祂来,那是圣经的话来的。

Okay,Now we finished that last pray,现在讲完这个最后的祷告了,in my denomination tradition,根据我的宗派的传统呢,we very often gives an invitation.我们常常在这个时刻做一个邀请。This morning if you have not taken lord’s supper with us,今天早上假如你没有跟我们领圣餐的话,We invite you to take the first opportunity to believe in Jesus as your savior and to get baptized and join the church.我们邀请你尽快地抓住机会信主耶稣做你的救主,受洗加入教会。So that you can enjoy this privilege of lord’s supper with us as soon as possible.好叫你尽快地跟我们一起享受圣餐这个福气。So we give an invitation,I try to do almost every time.我尽可能每个月都讲这句话的。

Now before the lord’s supper,圣餐之前,I say four things.我讲四件事情的。We welcome you to take the lord’s supper,我们欢迎你来跟我们一同守圣餐,we ask these four things of you.我们要求你四件事。First, you have accepted Jesus as your personal savior.你很清楚地已经接受主耶稣做你个人救主。Two, you’ve been baptized.第二你已经受洗了。Three ,the church where you are a member accept you to take a lord’s supper,你所属于的教会允许你领圣餐的,that means you are not under discipline.换言之,你不是在纪律惩戒之下的。No.4,第四,you have prepared your heart this morning,and have confessed your sins,今天早上你已经预备你的心,已经认罪。Now in reformed circle we call this fencing building a fence around the lord’s table.这个用改革宗荷兰人的说法说,我们围一个栏杆保护圣餐的桌。It doesn’t mean we actually build a fence,不是我们真的弄一道墙,不是这个意思,it means that we warn people and require people to prepare properly.意思是说我们警告我们要求会众做出充分的准备。Also I spent a lot of time talking about the lord’s supper here,这里我们讲了很多关于圣餐的。Let me finish up the communion service of may 7th, page 32.32页我们讲完5月7号的崇拜。Before the lord’s supper we sing the hymn“there is a fountain”,我们在圣餐之前我们唱《耶稣宝血是一个活水的泉源》,I invite you to read the words carefully and think about them,我愿意大家好好地去读这些歌词,思想这些歌词,beautiful hymn.很美的一首诗歌。And after the lord’s supper we sing“blessed be the tie that binds”,然后我们圣餐之后唱一首关于信徒相通的,because this is leading up to discipline the theme of the sermon.因为我们很快就要讲道,讲纪律,讲惩戒的。

What is discipline?惩戒是什么?It is the whole church as a body united to deal with a particular personal sin.惩戒是整个教会一起来面对某某人或者某一项的罪。And so we sing this hymn that expresses our joy and our tears for the church.所以我们唱这首诗歌来表达我们为教会喜乐,也会为教会流眼泪的。Then we preached the sermon.然后我们讲这篇道。Paul’s discipline is how he loves the church.保罗管教教会是他爱教会的方法。And so at the last paragraph,最后一段哦,let us learn to love Jesus and to love the church,让我们来学习爱主耶稣,爱祂的教会,love boldly, love sacrificially.勇敢的爱,牺牲的爱。Because Jesus also wept for the church Luke 19:41 to 44.因为耶稣也为教会流眼泪的,路加十九章41-44。

So our offering hymn is I love thy Kingdom,Lord,I love thy church O Lord.所以我们奉献的诗歌是“我爱主的国度”、“我爱主的教会”。We are willing to suffer on behalf of for the welfare of the church,我们为教会,为教会的好处愿意受苦,until we reap the glorious harvest.直到我们欢呼收割,哈利路亚,阿们!赞美主,阿们!So again I picked an attribute of God:holiness,我选了一个神的属性——圣洁,to wrap around the ministry of discipline.来包着教会的惩戒的工作。And since it is the ministry of a church,既然惩戒是教会的事工,we sing hymns that express the unity of the church and the love of the church.所以,我们唱一些关于教会合一、同心的诗歌。So we draw some things from the doctrine of God,doctrine of Christ,doctrine of the Church.所以我们从神论、基督论、教会论来取材设计这堂的崇拜。

And I would love to,if we have time,to show you many of the other orders that we’ve done in the past four to five months,approximately twenty of them.过去直到这个月底一共大概有20多堂的崇拜,我们设计了这些的程序敬拜指引。Now this particular order is not a strictly Presbyterian or reformed nor a strictly baptist order,我这个的主日崇拜不完全是长老会,也不完全是浸信会,甚至乎不完全是改革宗的。It is not strictly reformed,不严谨来说不是改革宗,because of the second hymn,communion with Christ,receiving his promises.因为我们唱第二首诗歌领受主的应许,与耶稣亲近交通。That comes from my baptist background.这个是来自我浸信会的背景。We baptists,I mean my past.

I love to sing about Jesus and his love for us.浸信会的人是很喜爱唱耶稣跟耶稣对我们的大爱的。And so for six months now,not just five,所以6个月了,不止5个月去年就开始的,I’ve been choosing Gospel hymns that baptists and other evangelicals just love to sing.所以过去这6个月,我选的都是浸信会跟其他福音派较为心爱、爱唱的诗歌的。But on the other hand,the first hymn is a hymn of praise and worship,a bit more solemn and glorious.第一首呢,是比较荣耀、尊贵的赞美的诗歌。And the last two hymns,No.4 and 5,第四第五首呢,I’ve been stressing giving everything you have to Jesus,我六个月来都是强调说,我们要把一切献给主,全人献给他,一切所有献给他,because Jesus is Lord.因为耶稣是主。The third hymn is somewhere between No.2 and No.4,第三首讲道前的,有点像第二首有点像第四首。And so I’ve tried to combine the best of Presbyterian,Baptist into one order.所以我尽量把两个传统最好的结合起来。I was not born Presbyterian nor born Baptist.我出生不是浸信会也不是长老会的。If you have to put a label on where i was born and grew up。假如你真的要把一个标签放在我成长的过程的话呢,I would say I was born a Methodist.我会说我是卫斯理宗长大的。It doesn’t mean I was born into a Methodist church,我不是卫理公会的教会长大,but I was born into and grew up in a Wesleyan Holiness Bible school in Hong Kong.但是我是在这个卫理派的圣洁派的神学院长大的,在香港。And by the time I was in primary six,到了小学六年级的时候,we would sing in the fellowship,我们在青年团唱的诗歌,from youth hymns one two three four five six seven eight,我们唱的是《青年圣歌》12345678,the forerunner of the hymns of life,Christian missionary alliance.是《生命圣诗》的前身,宣道会的。

I did attend some Baptist churches and vacation Bible schools,because I went to a baptist primary school.因为我去的小学是浸信会的,所以我也去过浸信会崇拜,绝对去过浸信会的假期圣经学校。And as a fourteen year old,my father was already in America,my mother brought me and my brother America。14岁的时候爸爸已经在美国第二次去读神学了,妈妈把弟弟跟我带到美国。We were surrounded by a hundred and fifty percent love of a baptist congregation,the blue collar congregation.我们被一个蓝领的浸信会的会众他们的爱150 Percent包围了,two years两年。1965-67,then about five years later,五年之后,after university went to seminary,大学毕业了进到神学院,and as a poor seminary student and wife,做一个穷神学生还有我的太太,We became the choir conductor and so called organist again in a blue collar Baptist church which again surrounded us with a hundred fifty percent love.我们再一次地在不同的地方,在一个蓝领的浸信会当诗班指挥跟司琴,再一次地被这个蓝领的会众150 percent的爱包围了。So I think I am a little bit qualified to tell you what kind of hymns the baptists love to sing.所以我应该有足够资格告诉你浸信会的唱诗生活是怎么样的。

Of course I went to Presbyterian seminary,但是我去的神学院是长老宗的,and I can tell you what hymns we sing during seminary chapel,我可以告诉你同一段时间神学院里面早会唱的什么诗歌的。Not to forget the holiness and the alliance tradition.不要忘记我小的时候的圣洁派,还有宣道会的。I’m a cart carrying Calvinism Presbyterian,我是正牌的改革宗跟长老宗的,Reverend Stephen Tong will testify to that.唐崇荣牧师会跟你说的。But in my blood it’s also the baptist singing tradition and a loving tradition,但是我的血液里面接受过浸信会的爱和唱诗的传统,and also the missionary zeal of the Christian missionary alliance,还有宣道会的宣教的热忱,et cetera,等等。And so now in my eighth decade in my life,现在我已经进到人生的第八个十年了。What I offer to the churches is the theological(ruozha?),是神学上的一个的混合品。I hope that it is drawn from the best of each tradition,希望是在不同的传统都抓到他们的精华,and it’s base is reform theology,基础是改革宗神学,but it does not exclude the Wesleyan holiness emphasis and the baptist Joy and loving traditional.没有排除卫斯理宗的追求圣洁的传统,跟浸信会的喜乐、唱诗、爱人的传统。

Now very soon,we’re going to have a second talk on hymns and history.我们很快就会有“圣诗走过历史的长廊”的第二次的讲座。Now during that second seminar,在那个第二次的讲座呢,We’ve already finished talking about Isaac Watts pretty much.我们已经讲完Watts了。I had to say a few words about John Newton and William Cooper and Augustus Toplady.还有几个改革宗的圣诗大师的,Newton,Cooper,Toplady要交代一下。Then I will move into the Jesus and I,Jesus loves me,tradition of the Gospel song,之后我就会讲“耶稣与我”的那些福音诗歌的传统了,Zinzendorf 、Wesley、 Fanny Crosby.德国敬虔派的贵族Zinzendorf,查理斯卫斯理,Fanny Crosby等等。

And if there’s time during the second seminar,假如第二次讲座还有一点留下来的时间,I will say a few words about contemporary worship and praise.我会讲几句关于当代敬拜赞美的话。Let me just throw out the conclusion now,so you will know it.我先告诉你预告那个结论是什么。In the last thirty five to forty years there was a war in the church,过去35年40年教会经历了一场的战争,worship war,敬拜之战,Classical versus contemporary.古典和当代打仗。Each says the other side have either no emotion or no mind.每一边都说另外一边是没有头脑的,或者没有情感的。Each side has invested a lot of money and time either in getting degrees in music or spending hundreds of thousands of dollars in music equipment,sound equipment.每一边都投资了很多心血,一边是去音乐学校拿了学位,另外一边是投资了很昂贵的音响器材。My conclusion is,我的结论是,first of all the contemporary side has won,the classical side has lost.很客观地说当代的赢了,古典的输了。You can count how many churches still have an organ.你可以数出有多少教会还是有电风琴的。

Now it doesn’t mean that we should throw out traditional hymns,我不是,我意思不说我们就不要再唱古典音乐了,you notice my first seminar is all about classical hymns.你看到我第一个讲座全部是讲古老的圣诗的。I call for ceasefire and peace talks.我呼吁停战和谈。It is my conviction that in one single worship service you can combine many kinds of music.我相信在一堂崇拜可以结合很多不同传统的诗歌的。Now it takes work,it’s an art.需要努力的,是一门艺术来的。You can go from organ、Bach、Martin Luther、Psalms、Fanny Crosby to Jazz same service.同一堂崇拜可以有电风琴、巴哈、路德、诗篇、福音诗歌、爵士。It depends how you put it together.你怎么样把它组合起来。As we face the next generation,我们下一代,they can tune into multiple channels at the same time,他们同时可以听很多不同的管道的,同一秒钟。Actually we are bombarded by that in the shopping mall every day.我们去购物中心等等每天都是被这种的多元管道的音乐轰炸的。So we might as well get used to it.我们习惯就对了。We need a big or bigger heart,我们心胸要扩大,but our minds need to be more focused,and learn more Bible and more history.我们的脑袋要更加的尖锐学习圣经,学习圣诗的历史,教会的历史。Both,两样都要做。My time is gone.我们已经过时了。

Let us pray together.一起祷告:Holy Spirit,we give you thanks for enlightening the church all through the years,圣灵,我们感恩因为你在过去2000年光照教会,so that the church response to the Word that you have inspired,你叫教会能够回应你所默示的话,responding to the Bible with hymns of praise,thanksgiving and prayer.教会回应你的圣经,用赞美,用感恩,用祷告。Oh Holy Spirit,you who has led the hymn writers,may you lead us today as hymn singers,正如你带领着写圣诗的人生,你今天也带领我们唱圣诗的人,so that church worship can be rich,glorious and pleasing to God.好叫教会的敬拜是丰富的、荣耀的,最重要是讨神的喜悦的。Thank you Spirit of God,神的灵我们感谢你。We prayed through the finished work of Jesus Christ.我们这样祷告都是依靠耶稣的宝血跟复活的。Amen。
